Back in 2017, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight champion Anderson Silva expressed his desire to face former Featherweight and Lightweight champion, Conor McGregor.
While many scoffed at the idea given the obvious size advantage “The Spider” — who has fought at Light Heavyweight — would have over “Notorious,” the bout does have a possibility of actually happening, as Conor also wants to test his skills against the former pound-for-pound GOAT.
Seriously.
“We’ll see what happens, but I don’t think next,” he said. “He (St-Pierre) doesn’t really have anything for me personally. I’m not going to shut the door on that down the line. You know what would be another great one? Anderson Silva, stated Conor during an interview on the Ariel Helwani MMA Show (Via ESPN).
”I would be interested in an Anderson Silva bout. I swear to God. Anderson is a legend in the game. What’s the difference between him and Georges? Same damn thing. I’m going to do fights that interest me or have meaning.”
As we’ve seen in the past, what Conor wants, Conor gets.
Furthermore, “Notorious” says a trilogy fight between he and Nate Diaz will happen before it’s all said an done since they are currently even at one win a piece.
“Nate Diaz will always have a rematch off of me,” he said. “No matter what happens I will always give that man gave his rematch. He gave me a rematch, I will give him a rematch. When it will happen? I don’t know. We will complete that trilogy, no doubt about it.”
McGregor will make his much-anticipated return to the Octagon to face current 155-pound champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at the upcoming UFC 229 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which is set to go down this Saturday (Oct. 6, 2018) inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Should the mouthy Irishman come up short, it won’t spell the end for his run inside the eight-sided cage as he previously inked a “breath-taking” new contract extension that will see him compete for the promotion at least six more times.
As for Silva, he is expected to make his return in the early parts of 2019, though a showdown against McGregor won’t happen anytime soon, as there are several moving parts regarding a matchup of this caliber, especially when it comes to weight.
Diaz, meanwhile, will also make his long-awaited return at UFC 230 to face Dustin Poirier on Nov. 3, 2018 in New York, N.Y., though it won’t be for a title.
