If it weren’t for questionable Nevada judging, Gennady Golovkin would be coming into 2019 with a perfect 40-0 record. Instead, that record now sits at 38-1-1 due to two controversial decisions against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Their first fight? An absolute robbery. The rematch that just took place in September? Close, but most still had “GGG” winning.
TMZ Sports caught up with Golovkin at the airport and asked him what’s next.
”I don’t know, I have no idea right now,” he said. When asked if he’d be interested in fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov and / or Conor McGregor, he replied “These huge guys, yeah. I saw their fight. It was a good fight.”
As for who he’d want to fight, Golovkin didn’t sound too picky.
”Both!” he said with a smile.
Of course, all this boxing vs. MMA stuff has been going on since Conor McGregor blew the doors open between the sports with his August 2017 fight against Floyd Mayweather. Dana White continues to have meetings with Floyd, attempting to draw the boxing phenom into the Octagon against Khabib for another big payday. We think Mayweather would be pretty silly to agree to that, but how silly is anything that earns you $100 million dollars?
Now it sounds like Gennady Golovkin is interested in some of that crossover superfight money. Unfortunately for him, we doubt there’ll be much of a lineup of MMA stars willing to step up. Golovkin isn’t a tactician like Mayweather, he’s a devastating knockout artist that would make anyone outside of a choice few at the top of boxing look silly in the ring. It’s too bad that reputation makes it harder for him to earn the big bucks, but that’s the sad reality these days.
