That’s because there is a very high possibility the promotion decides to do away with the 125-pound men’s division now that “Mighty Mouse” has been traded to ONE Championship for Welterweight standout, Ben Askren.
While it’s not set in stone, Cejudo knows it very well could happen, which means his next fight could be against current Bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw.
“I think more likely that T.J. fight might happen,” Cejudo said on a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast (via MMA Fighting). “That T.J. fight might happen if they’re going to be done with the flyweight division. I think that cat’s out of the bag and Dana had mentioned that to me. He said, ‘Hey Cejudo, we’re going to take you up on that challenge for you to go up against T.J., but this is what the company has been thinking about for while.’”
For his part, Johnson doesn’t want to see the Flyweight division go up in smoke after trying his hardest to build it up over the last several years, though he made a mockery of all of the 125-pound contenders by running through them before ultimately falling to Henry, a man he knocked out previously.
Another man who wouldn’t want to see the division dissolve is Dillashaw, who had his heart set on becoming the promotion’s next “champ-champ.” For Henry, it doesn’t matter to him what weight class he meets Dillashaw at, he just wants to scrap with the best.
“I like both ideas. I kind of left it off to him. I said, ‘I don’t know but I want to fight you.’ I want to fight T.J. and I want to go after the next best thing, and I think that’s him,” he said. “Let’s do it at ‘25 or let’s do it at ‘35, but let’s fight, man. I believe T.J. wants to fight me too.”
Defeating Dillashaw for the 135-pound title will be yet another feather in “The Messenger’s” cap, who says his career won’t go past another five years.
“I’ve accomplished everything I’ve ever wanted to in my career,” Cejudo said. “I had three goals. My number-one goal was just to be a good person, a good father, a good husband. And then after that was to be an Olympic champ and eventually a UFC champ. And I’ve done everything I’ve ever kinda set my mind to. Those were the two biggest things anyone could do. I don’t see myself fighting for [more than] maybe three or four years,” he concluded.
A potential landing spot for the Dillashaw vs Cejudo title fight could be at UFC 233 on January 26, 2019 in Anaheim, California. But don’t expect it to headline if this happens.
