Last weekend marked the one year anniversary of the big money Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing fight. A whole lot of digital ink was spilled labeling the fight a profitable diversion without much actual oomph in the ring, which I think is a bit of an undersell. So many boxing pay-per-views end with pissed off people wondering why they wasted their money. But no one walked away from the MayMac fight feeling disappointed – well, except the people whose feeds didn’t work.
That’s why I think there’s a pretty decent chance we see Mayweather and McGregor fight again sometime over the next couple of years. And I’m not alone. Floyd Senior also thinks the recent back and forth chatter between the two spells the start of MayMac 2 hype.
”It’s sounding like him and Conor McGregor are going to fight,” he said in an interview with Helen Yee. “That’s what it sounds like. I don’t know for sure, but I’m just saying the way things are sounding to me. It sounds like [Floyd’s] going to fight again, and Conor McGregor, he wants to fight again. Even though he don’t want to fight again, but he’ll fight again just to show his people what he can do – which is nothing.”
And unlike the first fight where Floyd Sr. suggested a slow build, he wants the rematch to be a domination that’ll end McGregor’s boxing aspirations.
”This time here, I’m gonna make sure that he gets stretched out,” Floyd Sr. said. “All the way out of the game. I want to make sure he don’t come back no more.”
As for those rumors that MayMac 2 would happen in a cage instead of a ring?
”I’m just saying, I think they’re gonna fight the same way,” he said. “I think Conor McGregor wants that win back that he had, which is never coming back to him anyways. It’s being talked about and it sounds like a lot of interest is in it right now.”
McGregor has said the loss bothers him and that he feels he’d win a rematch, even in a boxing ring. With another half a billion dollars on the table, do you really feel like this isn’t likely by 2020?
