Jon Jones reclaimed light heavyweight gold last night (Sat., Dec. 29, 2018) at UFC 232 live on pay-per-view from inside The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., and immediately turned his attention to No. 1 rival Daniel Cormier, who had to relinquish his 205-pound throne earlier this week to pave way for Jones’ impressive UFC 232 victory over Alexander Gustafsson.
Given the history between Jones and Cormier you had to expect “DC” was going to react to last night’s title fight. Cormier has been very outspoken about Jones’ USADA issues in the past, especially his most recent abnormal test result, so it wasn’t a surprise to see the current UFC heavyweight champion mention it in this following post-fight tweet:
“I mean shit, he should win,” wrote Cormier. Dude starts with a head start everytime.”
Following his initial social media reaction, Cormier tweeted to UFC’s Dominick Cruz stating that’d he be open to a trilogy fight with Jones as long as the testing comes out clean.
“You just said outside of all the testing stuff,” wrote Cormier to Cruz. “Is there really stuff outside of the testing? Or we just do more testing and neither of us fail. That would be best case! We do that I’ll be back at 205!”
While Cormier would love the opportunity to stay at heavyweight and gets his hands on a Brock Lesnar payday, the trilogy fight between he and Jones is obviously the fight to make. Jones is already up 2-0 on Cormier, but “DC” has never looked better on his way to becoming 2018’s Fighter of the Year.
Only time will tell if Jones vs. Cormier 3 takes place in 2019 and whether or not it will be contested at light heavyweight.
